The year in which we broke all records, together. The most registered competitors, the most competitors who finished the race, the largest number of children and youth as voluntary firefighters, race records broken, and most of all, the most money raised.
The humanitarian action called the Humanitarian Firefighter Race, better known as the Zagreb Firefighter Stair Challenge, was held from September to December for the 12th time. This year, as in the last six years, we raised funds for the Hummingbirds Association, an association of parents of critically ill children who require 24-hour care in order to survive. The funds raised will be used to purchase necessary aids for children: bathing aids, oxygen concentrators, electric wheelchairs, special car seats, communicators, and two special tricycles.
As part of the Humanitarian Campaign itself, we organized two Humanitarian Pub Quizzes this year in the Fakin Craft Bar in Zagreb, and part of both quizzes was firefighting-themed. We also continued with the humanitarian auction on the Facebook page, which this year was joined by various companies and individuals, as well as athletes, and our handball players, and football clubs NK Varaždin and NK Dinamo, donated signed jerseys and balls. Through all donations, the pub quiz, auctions, and payment of entry fees, we collected a total of 25,628.48 euros, which is more than in any other year so far. The most important event of the entire humanitarian campaign is the Humanitarian Firefighters Stair Race, which is run up the stairs in the building at Strojarska 20 in Zagreb, and this year 680 competitors registered for it, of which more than 100 were firefighter children and youth. On the day of the race, 7th of December 2024. The largest number of Croatian firefighters could be seen in one place, because there were really people from all over the country, from Dubrovnik to Rijeka and Pula, from Varaždin and Čakovec to Osijek and Vinkovci, islanders and Lika residents, professionals and volunteers, big and small, men and women. The whole picture and the size of the event were completed by firefighters from other countries, making the race international again this year. In addition to domestic firefighters, firefighters from Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia competed.
In this way, we all once again showed the unity of firefighters, helped those in need, tested our physical fitness, and had a lot of fun at the same time. My son and I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Firefighter Stair Challenge for the first time. The organization is excellent. Everything was organized just right. Even more than that.
